Jerusalem, An Immovable Rock

On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves. Zech. 12:3 NIV

Recently, I heard Pastor Jack Hayford quote Zechariah’s awesome prediction using the NIV for the first time. The word IMMOVABLE jumped out. I have heard the word BURDENSOME used for some many years taken from the KJV, but the NIV’s rendering brought new light to the present day dilemma. Recently in Bible Study, I tried to recall a statistic I heard about how much time the UN spent trying to solve the present day dilemma of Israel surrounded by her Arab neighbors but couldn’t.

I felt the statistic would be helpful because the actual figures would show how “burdened” the nations of the world are trying to solve the Middle East tensions centered around Israel. So I pulled the actual numbers of UN Security Council Resolutions that Israel had since it became a nation again in 1948, and there were 225. The only other place anywhere near that amount was Palestine (not yet declared a state) with 187 resolutions. Egypt has had its share of troubles over the years, yet it only came in with 18 resolutions. Not surprisingly, the US only had 9. What about Syria with the worst present day refugee crisis in history? It only had 85. I tried to think of other nations with troubled pasts, and most of them barely registered. Libya only had 16. Iran who threatens to blow Israel off the map, only had 17. Nicaragua was in the single-digits with 6. And lastly, one that I thought really odd given the barrage of missiles launched from it, was the reclusive nation of North Korea. Can you believe, they only had 19?

Why does the UN, or the nations of the world, spend so much time on Israel and not some of the known trouble-makers? I think it is clear that there is a bias against her. If you recall the recent speech when Prime Minister Netanyahu addressed the UN General Assembly, he seemed all alone as he made his case against the Iranian Nuclear deal the major players of the world passed with seemingly no thought for their threats to annihilate his country, Israel. Number one, God has miraculously made Israel a nation again and Jerusalem a prominent city in these last days; otherwise, the prophecy couldn’t even be up for consideration in our time. But the other part we mustn’t forget, is that he has also made her an IMMOVABLE ROCK. Zechariah’s prophesy is clear that all the nations of the world will come against Jerusalem to siege her in the end, but all who do will INJURE THEMSELVES!

Pastor Hayford also brought to light another driving force behind the nations positioning themselves against Jerusalem and one that could prove disastrous for us here in the United States. Take a look at this verse:

For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Matt. 24:24 KJV

Here Pastor Hayford said that those who have trusted in Jesus as their Saviour are the elect. When I read the passage, I always took the elect to be the Jews since this is talking about the time near the end of the Tribulation. Based on Paul’s explanation of the current dispensation of grace and how the Jews fit in to God’s plan, I again thought that the Jews were God’s elect, but upon further examination Paul does clearly say those who are recipients of God’s grace are the elect (Rom. 11:5-7, 28). In other words, the elect Jesus is talking about in this scripture here is the Church, not the Jews who have not yet place their faith in Christ Jesus.

According to Pastor Hayford, the deception is spreading among the nations of the world which is no surprise, but the alarming part, is that he also said the deception is spreading in the Church. Pastor Hayford shared that the Church’s failure to stand up for Israel at this time and proclaim the truth of the Scripture is only adding the spread of the deception. This does raise some serious questions though, for if it is not possible for the elect to be deceived, then who are those so deceived in the Church today? Nonetheless, this end time deception, according to Pastor Hayford, is the misinformation being spread about Israel. To be sure there is more to it than the world’s misinformation campaign against Israel, for the verse is clear that the false Christ and false prophets will also be performing lying signs and wonders deceiving many (also see 2 Thes. 2:9). But to be sure, the Church is part to blame for allowing ourselves to be indoctrinated by the world against Israel and for the spread of the misinformation. As for the dangers that await the US if we persist down this path, God’s Word is clear that anyone who blesses Israel will be blessed, but all who curses her will be cursed (Gen. 12:3).
