But not a dog shall growl against any of the people of Israel, either man or beast, that you may know that the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.’ Ex. 11”7 ESV
Again, recalling the first Passover, Egypt’s economy was decimated! But after nine refusals from Pharaoh, this Moses guy still won’t back down! He said his God had one more plague. He told Pharaoh if you don’t “let my people go,” every firstborn in the land will die. It is not so easy to write off a prophet with a track record like this Moses guy, but then again, this is Pharaoh we are talking about. He still refuses to listen to God’s demand!
Meanwhile in Goshen, all is well. Earlier in the plague against the livestock, God demonstrated what he meant when he makes a “distinction.” All of Egypt’s livestock died, but not a single one of Israel’s would be touched (Ex. 9:4). Only this time, we are not talking about livestock; this prophet warns that people will die and lots of them. Moses tells the Israelites that this tenth and final plague will all go down at midnight, and while there would be a “great cry throughout all the land of Egypt,” it would be so peaceful among them that “not even a dog will bark.” God again is making a “distinction between the Egyptians and the Israelites,” but this time around God is showing his mercy and protection over his chosen people, Israel, by sparing them from the deadly plague (Ex. 11:7 NLT).
What could be so powerful as to prevent the spread of this deadly plague and bring such peace to every household in the entire land of Goshen? God gave special instructions for every household to eat a meal with him and be spared. As they prepared this special meal, each household was to take the blood from their lamb and place it on their doorposts. And God told them, when I see the blood, I will “pass over you” (Ex. 12:13).
Just as we said with healing, the same could be said for peace. If the blood of a lamb in the Old Testament could bring such peace that not even a dog was barking in Goshen, what difference could the blood of the spotless Lamb of God make in your life and home today? My friend, it will make all the difference in the world because, as the song says, “What can wash away my sins?” The answer is “nothing but the blood of Jesus!” If you have not already, ask Jesus Christ today to forgive you of your sins, to come into your heart, and to be your Lord and Saviour.
Not only does this blood of Jesus make this peace of God available to you when you receive Jesus, but there is another very important truth that God wants to communicate to every household in our land today with this deadly virus on the loose. Only the precious blood of his only begotten Son can make the “distinction” between us and the world. Why is that so important? Again, when God saw the blood of the lamb over a household, the plague passed over them. But the sad truth is for those houses in Egypt, a type of the world, that did not apply the blood of the lamb, there was no passover. If you have trusted Jesus to save you from your sins, in faith apply his blood over your house today and trust him to protect you from this present plague, and all other dangers!
